Ulzzang VS Gyaru

Alright so i have been wanting to do this for some time now. A comparison between my two favorite 'styles' namely ulzzang and gyaru. I put style between apostrophes because ulzzang used to be more of a title than a style. However these days there are so many items being sold as ulzzang style and there a lot of videos on youtube about how to achieve the ulzzang look.

I feel like they are both similair and not similair at the same time. I will be comparing them on six points. Make up, fashion, picture style, origins, claim to fame and the future. This is just a fun and harmless comparison though. I love both but i am curious as to which is my favorite. Also it makes me think about the styles a little bit more. Let me just state that i don't mean any harm by comparing these two. This is just for fun and this is just my opinion.

So let's begin!

Make up

Ulzzang: I feel like ulzzang always go for the more natural and innocent look with their make up. While they also use fake lashes and circle lenses it seems like they are pretty much always leaning towards the neutral and softer colors. I do spot a lot of fake lashes on them most of the time but they are hardly as flamboyant as the many styles available in japan. They are very into emphasizing the eye make up but leaving the lips completely alone aside from lip balm. I don't see a lot of thick and heavy eyeliner though. The same goes for harsher colors like black. There seems to be a lot of shades of brown going on there.

Gyaru: All over the place really. There are many different styles of gyaru and most of the use wildly different make up styles too. I feel like any regular run of the mill gyaru wouldn't touch most of the make up styles in ageha because those might be too wild. In gyaru style i also see a lot of different colored circle lenses. They don't always stick to the brown colors. I also think gyaru use more obvious and elaborate fake lashes and more importantly they use a lot of bottom lashes. I don't remember ever seeing those on a ulzzang. Also gyaru seem to love heavier eyeliner a lot.

And the winner is?: Most definitely ulzzang. This is solely because a more natural look is more my own style. While i love the wild colors gyaru sometimes use it just doesn't suit me that much. I prefer the simple clean cut look the ulzzang make up has with circle lenses and lashes.

Fashion

Ulzzang: Like i have stated above ulzzang used to be more of a title than a style so i don't think there really was anything to start out with. Slowly a certain style began to evolve that people associated with ullzangs. However because ulzzang first and foremost means "Best face" i think this style heavily revolves around what is trendy in korea at the moment. So whatever a ulzzang might wear might not be exclusive to them and might be worn by any korean.

Gyaru: There is a lot of diversity in gyaru fashion. It is ever changing and trends come and go. I feel like some of the things gyaru might wear are wildly different from what is trendy in japan at the moment so it does constitute as a completely different style even though is is not that shocking appearance wise. Some things are quite flamboyant like items from Jesus Diamante or ma*rs and they might actually be almost exclusively worn by girls interested in gyaru fashion.

And the winner is?: Gyaru hands down! Even though i know that ulzzang fashion is even more diverse because i feel like it is generally what is trendy in the whole of south korea i believe that gyaru has a very clear line of what is being worn only by gyaru girls and what is not. Also i just feel like japanese fashion in general is a little more playful and over the top.

Picture style

Ulzzang: In the beginning ulzzang pictures were mostly low quality webcam pictures with a korean webcam program called haduri. Later it evolved into pictures taken with cellphone cameras and now it seems to have evolved into a high quality photo shoot. Most regular ulzzang pictures now look like they can just go into any fashion magazine right away. It seems like they walk around all day and when they find a pretty setting they have a mini photo shoot with a really really good camera. They only pull funny faces if they still look pretty while making them. They seem to be big fans of full body shots.

Gyaru: Still kind of in the previous century. Do you know that moment when you go to a well known gyaru model her blog and all the pictures are small and low quality? It happens a lot. It seems like a lot of gyaru still take pictures with their cell phone cameras that are not very crisp. Although i have just said that most pictures of gyaru have very spontaneous feel to them. They take pictures even while looking a little bit sweaty or with runny make up. This makes it a lot easier to relate to them because you can see them having a bad hair day. They also love pulling funny faces and don't care if it makes them appear less pretty. They are huge fans of close ups of just their face or mirror pictures.

And the winner is?: Surprisingly? Both! While i adore the fact that all ulzzang pictures are very crisp, clear and high quality the pictures are incredibly posed. It doesn't really feel like a real person? Like that person would go home and enjoy noodles in front of the TV or something. On the other side the pictures gyaru take are low quality and small but always seem fun. Pictures of going out with friends and stuff. They are also not too fussed about taking no make up pictures. Both pictures have their good points so i really can't choose! Ulzzang pictures make me feel happy because everything about the pictures is nice/pretty and gyaru pictures make me wanna go out with friends and have a great time.

Origins

Ulzzang: It has no real origin. I feel like the style primarily came from south korea their never ending thirst for gorgeous people. In the 'old' days one could not just become a ulzzang by making pretty pictures and putting them online. You actually had to win a ulzzang contest online to rightfully call yourself a full fledged ulzzang! Some people were a little stricter and thought you could only be a ulzzang if you were korean. Any other ethnicity making ulzzang like pictures were just 'web idols'. Things were quite hardcore! Especially ulzzang boys had a lot of fans. These days the craze has died down significantly and i believe now any pretty korean girl can be a ulzzang.

Gyaru: Who doesn't know the origin of gyaru? Breaking away from the japanese traditional beauty they tanned like there was no tomorrow, dyed their hair crazy colors, wore light contact lenses and behaved like they were in the comforts of their own room right in the middle of the street. It was definitely considered rebellion from the strict life of studying, marriage and children and drifting more into living your own life. Now the style has been significantly toned down but it still shown signs of rebellion!

And the winner is?: Gyaru of course. While ulzzangs are gorgeous they did not experience any issues. Gyaru was like a whirlwind that stormed right through the japanese ideal of pale skin, black eyes and hair and living your life the way society intended you too. I still adore reading about ganguro and manba. They were pestered and considered a plague by the older japanese people but continued to life the way they wanted too. It must have taken some real dedication.

Social

Ulzzang: So ulzzang literally means 'Best face' like i have said before. This generally means only pretty people can actually be considered ulzzangs. I don't think a ulzzang would hang out with another one solely because they both have the same title. I think a lot of ulzzangs have tons of friends but they are not ulzzangs themselves. Also most ulzzangs tend to take solo pictures anyway. I sometimes see pictures where they blur out another person next to them. This might be a stranger but sometimes i think these might just be their regular friends who don't want to be known online. Also someone needs to be taking those perfect pictures for them! Unless they like messing around forever with tripods and setting the camera functions to perfection.

Gyaru: They seem to be uber social. Every one who is into gyaru knows about the gyaru circles. Groups of gyaru who hang out together, go to karaoke, go to events or go to the beach in summer. It is not rare to see a gyaru out by herself but it is common to see small groups of gyaru running around and having a good time.

And the winner is?: Gyaru! Who doesn't need friends? Personally i have a small amount of friends and that is fine however it gets lonely sometimes seeing ulzzangs all alone in pictures. I like seeing pictures of gyaru girls together shopping, dancing or putting on make up. It just gives a lovely feeling. It does really make me want to call my best friend and go do fun stuff.

Claim to fame

Ulzzang: I can't even remember the number of times i read kpop groups their member information and see things like 'former ulzzang' or 'ex ulzzang' splattered all over the place. There are a lot of former ulzzangs now in korean pop groups. They might already have a fan base so they already pull people towards the debut of the group they are included in.

Gyaru: Some gyaru rise out above all others and actually make a name for themselves. I think every gyaru knows Tsubasa Masuwaka. She has made a name for herself as a gyaru model, gyaru mama, having her own line of fake lashes and recently starting a singing career. Even if her modeling career goes downhill she could still work behind the scenes as a designer.

And the winner is?: Ulzzang. Being a former ulzzang and going into a korean pop group gives you instant extra exposure. Their are idolized for their beauty and their talent. If you are a former ulzzang now in the entertainment industry you can almost become everything. Want a acting job? Modeling? You can pretty much do anything With the hallyu wave still having some kind of effect on eastern Asia and south east Asia they have a bigger chance of becoming well known in multiple countries.

The future

Ulzzang: I don't know what ulzzang is going to evolve into next but as long as south korea has such a beauty driven craze they are not going to fade away anytime soon. Pretty much everyone wants to look at pretty people living a nice life. I'm curious as to how ulzzang will evolve.

Gyaru: Gyaru has been around since the nineties and it is going to keep evolving. Going from ganguro to a multitude of different styles i think it is going to be around for a long time. Some people say the fad is over and that the gyaru have disappeared completely. This is not true however, they have just become less extreme. I don't believe gyaru will ever evolve into something that will blend into the japanese street view. I think they will always find a way to stand out.

And the winner is?: Gyaru has proven that it can evolve again and again into something that is still around at the moment. Even though people did not approve it is still here today. Ulzzangs never had that type of hate against them. It is easier for that style to continue to exist if the general public loves it. Gyaru still face some stereotyping from the regular crowd to this day.

So who is the real winner? I don't know it yet either! I wrote the content of this entry without any real planning aside from deciding on categories and pictures. I wrote what i thought and picked a winner based on the things that i wrote. So let us see who is the winner of this friendly comparison?

Ulzzang: 3 Points - Gyaru 5 Points

So gyaru has won! I can admit that gyaru was definitely one of my first fashion and beauty loves! Everything is just so right. I have loved every style from extremely eccentric to neat and neutral. I will continue to take from all styles and to mix and match what i like the best about them. Ulzzang has a special place in my heart as well and i adore it too.

Which do you prefer? Or do you like both pretty much equally like me?

  6. I love gyaru! but I don't know much about ulzzang. gyaru seems harder to achieve because it seems like you have to be skinny in the legs and buy a million outfits and get your nails done to death, but I still love it.

  10. i prefer ulzzang because they are all unique and cute! gyaru seem to be too strong for my taste;i mean it's definetly not healthy to do all the stuff these girls do to become gyaru;tanning;overdone make-up;the need to be a size 0

You don't need to be tanned or size 0 to be a gyaru. But you MUST be size 0 and photoshop your pics to be a ulzzang. Lots of them are crazy about plastic surgery too (South Korea, duh). Gyaru isn't so restrict, anyone can be one of them. But not anyone can be a ulzzang.

  11. I prefer Gyaru. I think Ulzzang is more simple and natural.
But Gyaru is so kawaii/cute from top to bottom (from their hair, outfit, makeup, nails, shoes, bag). All about gyaru is cute and rocking. I must say Gyaru is harder to achieve than Ulzzang. And i think when gyarus do ulzzang styles they will definitely look so much better than ulzzangs :)

It's the other way around actually. Gyaru is high maintainance than Ulzzang. Ulzzang as long as you have a pretty or good looking face you can wear anything. But with Gyaru its much more than that. It mostly have to wear skirts and blouse and clothings deemed cute, get tan, get manicurs, style your hair, and put your make up on; which includes eyebrows (you gotta trim them and put on makeup on eyebrows), eye shadows, contouring your face, sometimes if you want put glitters, stickers, or gemstones on your face (like SNSD/TTS does on their faces in their MV), and lipstick (a shade of pink, peach or nude color, they rarely put on bright or dark shades of color.)

You don't NEED to do everything you mentioned, you know '-' This would be for the "stereotypical gyaru". And lots of ulzzangs do that too.

  14. I love gyaru hairstyle and fashion especially the oneegyaru, shiro gyaru and morigyaru while in ulzzang i love the make- up

  15. I go for ulzzang thocause somehow gyaru make up is seeing really heavy to me..everything is ok, but gyaru hair style is kinda old (not to be mean, but it is) even if the ulzzang is not really pretty in life, they're still look quite the same with out make up or not, but gyaru is not like that, if without make up the person is ugly then it will look completely a different person when they wear make up (sorry my bad english)

i think is gyaru makeup can make u have different look but keep natural look, and it can make every girls be pretty like gyaru with their make up and style with their makeup it can cover u skin problem, for ulzzang it can be cute for everyone have clear smooth face but it can't help for everyone had skin problem like pimple and acne scar. because ulzzang makeup so natural and simple its can't much help for everyone had skin problem.. so i prefer gyaru, but i love ulzzang too..

  17. I really like both, but personally I prefer ulzzang. All that heavy make-up and rebellious clothes and hair just don't suit me that much. But of course the gyaru style is really unique and I like it too. :) Oh and thanks for posting, it was really fun and informative^^

  18. I think Ulzzang is cute. But sometimes i feel bad... because only PRETTY girls can be consider as ulzzang, basically... Koreans, white skin, skinny body. Those kind of things can make other girls feel bad and consider plastic surgery just to have a doll and kid face, and i know this is common there.

Now, everyone can have Gyaru style, doesnt matters if you are Japanese or not, if you are pretty or not, i saw alot of ppl around the world as 'Gyaru-girl'. You dont need look pretty and perfect. As you said, just having fun and dont care about what ppl say about you.

  22. I prefer gyaru. Yes, they usually do heavy makeup. But unlike Korea, MOST gyaru models in Japan don't do plastic surgery. So even if ulzzangs put on natural makeup, most of them have already gone through plastic surgery. Therefore i'd prefer heavier makeup to plastic surgery. Gyaru is also more original in my opinion.

    1. Exactly! My friends think I'm crazy for picking Gyaru with all the heavy makeup and tans, but to me, it's a lot better than having tons of plastic surgery to achieve the natural Ulzzang look. You get me :D.

I always think it's unfair when people say that ulzzang's more ~~natural~~. Well, it only LOOKS natural, you know.

    4. yes so true!! (I'm Tiffany btw) people should do more research and get their facts right before saying that it's more "natural".
